Hedges and bushes should be pruned in late winter when plants are dormant and haven't produced buds, particularly if you're cutting back drastically. You don't want them to break bud before you prune because you want the plant's energy to go toward producing new growth where you want it. If you take off a plant's buds, you're cutting off spent energy, and it will take longer for the hedge or bush to fill out.

There are three different types of chemical weed killers: 1) contact weedkillers that destroy the part of the plant that it touches; 2) systemic weedkillers that move within the weed’s sap stream and kill roots, leaves, and stems; and 3) residual weedkillers that kill weeds below the soil were they germinate. Often, reliance on chemical weedkillers can be reduced if not avoided entirely by undertaking regular hoeing, hand-weeding, and repeated cutting, as well as considering weed barriers like mulching, edging strips, and root barriers.
