Pine straw is light weight and easy to install. It naturally suppresses weeds in beds by reducing sunlight to the soil beneath. Pine straw is excellent for retaining moisture to bedding plants during hot summer months and for insulating the roots in colder winter months. Pine straw is also aesthetically appealing, providing a beautiful finishing touch to any landscape.
Mulch is a great option for beds in the front of your home that you would like to keep looking fresh or for larger perimeter areas where you want less maintenance. Mulch is also a great insulator and nutrient provider for some of the colorful annual plants that you invest in for curb appeal. Although mulch is more expensive and more difficult to spread, it typically lasts longer and demands far less clean up than pine straw.

Pine straw and mulch will generally last up to one year before needing to be refreshed. However, to keep that vibrant color of fresh pine straw or mulch year-round, we recommend refreshing beds and perimeters every six months.

Under normal conditions, pine straw and mulch should be applied 2-3 inches thick. However, if you already have a quality base from years of applications, then 1-2 inches is likely sufficient. Often, smaller applications of pine straw or mulch are used for a quick clean up to enhance a property for a house party or resale. In these instances case, 1-2 inches for color is all that is needed.
